Do you have a series (or a couple) that you find yourself recommending all the time? When people throw out certain trigger words like: “sarcastic male MC” or “Victorian London” do you always think of a certain set of books?
On the YA spectrum, popular series get tossed around A LOT (versus single releases). No matter how old or new a series, there’s bookstagram posts, Goodreads groups, and Kindle deals galore. All in all, it’s actually pretty cool because, even though we’re reading the same books, everyone takes away something different from the pages – since such a diverse age group reads YA these days.
My favorite YA series recommendations are:
•• The Veronica Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourn = this is the series I recommend most to people in their 20s and 30s (and older) who love YA but want just a little extra kick. All the elements of YA goodness are there, only with bigger vocabularies and smuttier edges.
Y’all. I love this series. I cannot even tell you how much, in fact; I could ramble on for days about the main characters, the themes, the humor/wit, Raybourn’s writing…
It is so. Much. Fun! If you haven’t read it, please do. (Especially fans of Gail Carriger and/or Colleen Gleason.)
•• Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo = the series I recommend most when people mention loving GROUPS of characters. Six of Crows is also the series I think I recommend most to men. It’s rough, dark, adventurous, and multi-layered. Love, love, love this world of Bardugo’s. (And Kaz Brekker. Amiright or amiright?) ❤️
•• The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare = the series I recommend most for lovers of love triangles. (Sigh.) The Mortal Instruments are cool and all but they’re fluff compared to The Infernal Devices, in my opinion. When it comes to Clare’s (several) series, this is the set I most often praise.
Honorable mentions include:
- The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden
- Both of Sarah J. Maas’s babies
- The Witchlands by Susan Dennard
What about you? Any series you feel like you recommend ALLLL the time?
